Gum Recession
Treatment without
Cutting or Sutures

Aliso Viejo, CA treats receding gums with the scalpel-free Pinhole Surgical Technique™

Receding gums can be more than just a cosmetic issue with your smile. If your gums are receding, it can cause tooth sensitivity and expose your tooth roots (which don’t have a protective enamel coating) to plaque, bacteria, and debris, leaving them at a greater risk of decay and damage. At Claire Cho DDS, patients in the Aliso Viejo, Laguna Hills, Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Laguna Woods, and surrounding CA communities can benefit from the Pinhole Surgical Technique™, a scalpel- and incision-free method of restoring your gums to their natural, healthy shape.

Causes of receding gums

Many patients who consult with Dr. Claire Cho ask about why their gums are receding in the first place. While gum disease (periodontitis) is a leading cause of receding gums due to bacteria and their toxic by-products eating away at the tissues, there are several other risk factors and causes for gum recession, including:

  • Clenching and grinding your teeth
  • Genetics
  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy and menopause
  • A misaligned bite
  • Brushing your teeth too vigorously
  • Smoking or use of other types of tobacco
  • Insufficient oral hygiene
  • Body jewelry in or around your mouth

By treating receding gums as soon as they begin to develop, you have less risk of decay, loose teeth, and even the possibility of tooth extractions.

What is the Pinhole Surgical Technique?

The Pinhole gum rejuvenation treatment is a truly revolutionary method for restoring your gums after gum recession. Traditional methods involve invasive procedures, such as cutting a portion of healthy tissue from another area in your mouth and grafting it into the area of gum recession. With the Pinhole surgery for receding gums, however, there are no scalpels, incisions, or sutures necessary! This technique, which can only be performed by specially trained dental providers, is performed by creating a pinhole-sized opening in the area of the gums near where they have begun to recede. Dr. Cho then uses specialized dental instruments to gently reposition the gum tissue over the area of recession, and places collagen strips over the repositioned tissue to promote healing and re-attachment. Patients choose the Pinhole Surgical Technique for many reasons:

  • The procedure causes minimal discomfort without swelling or bleeding
  • It is minimally invasive, so recovery is more comfortable and rapid
  • It can be performed on multiple teeth in the same visit
  • The appearance of your smile is improved immediately

The Pinhole Surgical Technique is just one of the many gum disease therapies that Dr. Cho offers at her dental practice. If you have noticed your gums receding, don’t hesitate to call and learn more about this novel treatment and other options to help restore your teeth and gums back to health! (949) 541-2529

PST is pinhole surgical technique where on patients who have recession, you're making a hole under the lip above the above the root and through that hole you're doing the instrumentation to release your tissue so it covers the root back up and you're putting collagen strips in between the teeth to hold it as a scaffold and in about 8 weeks the collagen strips dissolve and as it dissolves new tissue is generated and new attachments are formed to cover the root surface. In the past they used to take grafts from the pallet we do that at times as well because connective tissue grafts still has, the best result but there is limited amount of tissue, we have up on the pallet that if someone needed a lot of surfaces, you can't do it on one go so depending on the graft needed pinhole surgical technique there is no incisions no scalpel and no sutures done very simply. Patients like that the fact that there's no downtime and really no pain patients love the procedure when it can be done and to cover the root surfaces that are exposed for them.

Why Choose the Pinhole Surgical Technique?

The Pinhole Surgical Technique begins with the creation of a pinhole sized opening in the gum tissue near the area of recession. Through this opening, we will introduce specialized instruments that will enable her to gently loosen the tissue and reposition it over areas in need. Collagen strips are then placed which will hold the newly positioned gum tissue during healing. Since this procedure is minimally invasive and requires no sutures, the gums heal quickly. Patients enjoy a fast recovery time and we can treat several teeth in a single visit.
