Don't Ignore Early Signs of Periodontal Disease in Aliso Viejo

What are the early signs of periodontal disease?

Below are some indicators of periodontal disease or gum disease:

  • Red, swollen, or tender gums
  • Gums that bleed easily with brushing or flossing
  • Receding gums that may cause teeth to look longer than normal
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Pus between the gums and teeth that appear when pressure is placed on the gum tissue
  • Loose or separated teeth
  • A change in how your bite feels

If you notice any of these problems between your routine dental appointments, you need to schedule a visit with Dr. Claire Cho and her team as soon as possible. The early detection and speedy treatment of periodontal disease help to minimize its effects and even reverse some of the damage caused by this infection. A professional cleaning from your dentist can also help to remove plaque and tartar that can contribute to the development of periodontal disease.

How do I treat periodontal disease?

The earlier stages of periodontal disease, called gingivitis, can be reversed with a deep cleaning. However, later-stage periodontal disease can only be controlled, not cured, so maintenance appointments are required to keep the condition from leading to tooth loss, bone loss, and shrinking gum tissue. Regular scaling and root planing procedures may be advised, along with antibiotics, to address the bacteria in the smile contributing to the condition.
