What is LANAP®?
At our office, we offer non-surgical periodontal therapy called LANAP®, and that stands for Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure. It is performed with Nd: YAG laser specifically made to target the bacteria that causes the gum disease.
LANAP® is the first, and only FDA approved laser gum disease procedure that is an alternative to the traditional painful scalpel and suture gum surgery.
Is the LANAP® procedure painful?
Most of the patients find gum surgery very uncomfortable, and after having half the mouth done, they prefer not to finish the other half.
But with LANAP® procedure, there is no downtime. There is no pain because you are anesthetized while doing it. The post-op discomfort is very minimal.
What are the benefits of LANAP®?
It’s a no-cut, no-sew alternative to traditional gum surgery. We can effectively kill a lot more bacteria and also regenerate new bone. We have saved many teeth this way. There is no bleeding and no sutures involved. So patients find it to be a very comfortable procedure as an alternative to the scalpel and sutures.

The LANAP procedure is performed right in the comfort of our familiar office and consists of several steps to ensure the best results. First, we measure the depth of the pockets, which helps Dr. Cho determine how much your gums have detached from your teeth. Then, a pulsed laser light is used to kill the bacteria that are causing the disease. It only treats the infected tissues, leaving the neighboring healthy tissues unharmed. Then, we remove any built-up calculus from beneath the gum line using an ultrasonic scaler and pass the laser over the area a second time to help form a clot, which promotes a healthy healing environment while reducing the chance of further infection. At that point, we compress the gum tissues against your teeth to help them reattach—no sutures are necessary! Finally, we will check and adjust your bite as needed to prevent too much pressure from being placed on certain areas of your mouth.
