What is Composite Resin?

Composite resin is a material often used in different areas of dentistry, typically for restoration and esthetics. This material is composed of various substances, including plastic and glass. It is a popular choice for many patients because it can be used to restore damaged teeth or enhance the appearance of teeth that may be stained or misshapen.

Composite resin is often used to:

  • Restore decayed teeth
  • Fill cavities
  • Repair cracked or chipped teeth
  • Build up worn down teeth
  • Change the shape or color of teeth

What are the Benefits of Resin Dental Fillings?

Composite resin dental fillings have many benefits over other types of dental fillings. These fillings are less likely to cause tooth sensitivity, they can be matched to the color of your natural teeth, and they bond well to the tooth structure. Composite resins also wear well and are less likely to chip or break than other types of fillings.

Why Should I Avoid Silver Amalgam Fillings?

Silver amalgam fillings have several disadvantages:

  • They are more likely to cause tooth sensitivity
  • They are not as well bonded to the tooth structure
  • They can chip or break
  • They are made of mercury, a toxic substance
  • They are not esthetically pleasing
  • They expand and contract with temperature changes

To maintain a healthy AND beautiful smile, our team will often recommend the advantages of composite resin fillings over traditional silver amalgam fillings.
