Gum Recession and the Importance of Treatment

When you see a dentist, a common thing he or she checks is whether or not your gums are recessing. This is often a sign of other dental problems and is a direct result of periodontal disease and gingivitis. That is why Dr. Claire Cho at the Claire Cho DDS always recommends patients with gum recession get treated as soon as possible. This helps reduce the risk of further complications and possibly reverse some of the initial issues.

Gum recession

What Is Gum Recession?

Gum recession is the term to describe when the soft tissue of the gums begins to separate from the teeth. This leads to an exposure of the roots of the gum. This often begins with gingivitis or periodontal disease, which is commonly caused by a bacterial infection in the mouth.

What Are the Issues Connected With Recession?

When your gums start to recede, it puts you at risk of many problems. Some of the most common ones include the following:

  • Sensitivity
  • Loose teeth
  • Lost teeth
  • Increased risk of root decay
  • Bad breath
  • Bleeding gums

In addition to these problems, the recession also increases your risk of developing other diseases and problems in your teeth and gums.

Why Is Treatment Important?

It is important to get treatment for gum recession as soon as you notice it. This can help you avoid many of the issues involved with the disease or at least reduce the severity. For example, you might experience little to no sensitivity in your tooth and prevent the loss of your teeth. This also can work with any of the cosmetic issues that might arise from periodontal disease and subsequent issues such as lost teeth.
